This 13-day birding safari in Rwanda takes you to some of the most beautiful and biodiverse areas in the country, including Nyungwe National Park, Akagera National Park, and Lake Kivu. You’ll have the opportunity to see a wide variety of birds, including the rare Ruwenzori turaco, the blue-headed coucal, and the African harrier-hawk. You’ll also be able to enjoy the stunning scenery and learn about the local culture.
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by our professional guide and transported to the hotel where you will spend the evening and night. You will receive a briefing on the safari plan, and if time permits, you may participate in a Kigali city tour.
Following your breakfast, a professional driver guide will pick you up from your hotel at 8:00 AM to begin exploring the city. As the capital of Rwanda, Kigali offers a chance to learn about Rwanda's history before, during, and after colonization. You will also visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Campaign Against Genocide Museum. After lunch, you will be transported to Nyungwe National Park.
Nyungwe National Park is known for its diverse avian population, consisting of over 340 species, with 31 of them being exclusive to the Albertine Rift, such as the Ruwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, red-collared mountain babbler, red-faced woodland warbler, blue-headed sunbird, purple breasted sunbird, yellow-eyed black flycatcher, and regal sunbird. This park is considered a significant birdwatching site in Rwanda. In just four days, visitors can see 85% of the bird species and various monkeys. The birdwatching tour starts early in the morning at 6:00 am with a knowledgeable guide who is familiar with the birds and their locations. The guide will brief the clients and develop a plan for the day based on their checklist and preferences.
Akagera National Park is recognized as the second most significant birdwatching site in Rwanda, home to over 500 bird species, with about 100 of them not found in any other protected area in the country, such as the Shoebill. The park is inhabited by various bird species, including the Soot falcon, Red-winged francolin, Red-necked francolin, Red-faced barbet, Shelley's francolin, Sabanis's bunting, Dimorphic egret, Booted eagle, Brown-chested lapwing, Denham's bustard, Papyrus gonolek, African jacana, and many more. Visitors can spot about 90% of these birds in just four days. The birdwatching tour commences at 6:00 am with an experienced guide who is well-versed in bird identification and locations. Volcano National Park is inhabited by various wildlife species, such as Mountain gorillas, Buffaloes, forest elephants, golden monkeys, bush pigs, duikers, spotted hyenas, and many more. The park is also home to over 200 bird species, including the Handsome francolin, Dusky crimson wind, Red faced woodland warbler, Rwenzori batis, strange weaver, Rwenzori double collared sunbird, Blue-spotted wood dove, Red-backed shrike, Archer's ground robin, Cinnamon-chested bee-eater, Collared Apalis, Baglafecht weaver, Bateleur, and Grauer's rush warbler, which is an endangered species due to habitat loss. Visitors can see about 85% of these birds in just three days. Throughout the year you can visit Rwanda, From March to May and September, the rain is heavy and persistent. January, February and June up to December, the dry season is the best time for hiking in the forest for enjoying the green landscape and the beautiful view of the countryside and more migrant birds ,even primates tracking easily because most of the trees are fruiting.
